Written for my Digital Ethics in Internet Policy class in the fall of 2024, this analysis consists of research I conducted on the Utilitarian ethical perspective regarding social media moderation.
Directed towards web professionals and moderators, this document provided perspective on the legal and ethical uses of social media content, and exactly how much power platforms should have when it comes to moderation.
To explain the Utilitarian perspective, I used real-life situations and explained how it could have been applied to have help audiences move closer to a resolution. My analysis of the public’s panic preceding the 2024 solar eclipse and TikTok’s insufficient use of ethical policies illustrate real-world consequences of lacking utilitarian ethics online. My evaluation suggests that implementing these ethical approaches in these situations ultimately would promote peace and stability.
Additionally, my exploration of digital databases and academic articles combined with my ability to synthesize information led to a unique and organized final product. Throughout the revising and editing process, various peer reviews were considered, ensuring that the analysis provided flexible and non-biased viewpoints. This demonstrated by understanding of various approaches to technical communication and writing for specific audiences.
